![]() ![]() I was particularly concerned about my privacy: to a certain degree it's somewhat inevitable to give it up, because this kind of app must gain access to your files. Off the top of my head, here's a brief summary of the situation: the vast majority are desktop apps, not mobile (and that's fair, but not what I desired) most of them support just 1-2-3 services almost all of them are paid, even subscription-based, and some are free just until the scan phase, then you have to pay to delete the files and, last but not least, the ones I personally tried don't connect directly to the servers of the cloud services, but communicate with a proprietary server. No existing app on the market, desktop or mobile, checks all these boxes! At least that I know of. Made specifically for the cloud, leveraging the APIs.There are some, but for a reason or another I wasn't convinced by any of them because I ideally wanted something with these features: I obviously googled to find out a pre-existing solution. Someone must already have made an app like this, right? There has to be a better way.Īnd there is indeed: technically, the APIs of cloud storage services have methods that allow you to get the "hash" values of the files, so you can compare them even if you don't download them at all. I didn't need anything sophisticated but one thing has always been clear to me: I refuse to keep 500+ GB of files downloaded on my computer, just to be able to run some "traditional" duplicate removal utility. When I created it I was driven by a personal need: I had stuffed my cloud storage with tons of garbage that I know I didn't need yet I didn't want to get rid of - sounds familiar? - especially auto-backups of WhatsApp media folders, where duplicate copies are commonplace (at least if you're like me and you regularly forward or receive the same picture/video/meme/whatever to or from multiple chats). (TLDR: website link - iOS: App Store - Android: Play Store) It's called "DeDuplicate" and it's published on the App Store and the Play Store.Īs stated in the title of this post, the purpose of my app is to identify and delete duplicate files in the cloud, but WITHOUT downloading the files and wasting bandwidth.
